Motorhome tour Swakopmund in Namibia
After a few days in nature, Swakopmund is a nice change. Swakopmund is probably the most beautiful city in Namibia, at least culturally. In the city center you will find a lot of German architecture in old buildings and pastel shades and Jungendstil facades dominate. You will still find German restaurants, bars and Konditoreien, where you can order Apfelstrudel, for example. In the Swakopmund Museum you will find a good exhibition on the colonial German era. Because of its location on the Atlantic Ocean, Swakopmund is one of the few seaside resorts in Namibia.
An absolute must is a tour with Living Desert Tours. In the dune area south of Swakopmund, you will search for the "Little Five," the small animals that have adapted to life in the desert. You will be amazed at what you will encounter in the desert. We drive in a 4WD through the dunes until our guide spots the first life: a chameleon. We walk around some more and also see some tracks and a skink, a kind of small snake. A little later we see the star of the show: the Palmato Gecko with its pastel colors. What a beauty! We also see spiders, lizards and insects. Luckily no snakes, I'm not into those. Brrr. We end the tour with a drive through the beautifully red dunes and a refreshing drink.
Another recommendation is a boat ride in the Walvis Bay Lagoon. The area around the lagoon is a protected nature reserve where you can spot a large number of birds. Think for example of flamingos, pelicans and penguins, which stay there depending on the season.
Tip from Diana:
The Tiger Reef Beach Bar & Grill on the beach is a great place to relax after a long drive through the desert.
We visited a small gin distillery, Stillhouse Gin. The gin is made with local ingredients, very tasty! If you call in advance you can stop by the distillery, where the gin is lovingly made in small batches.
