Motorhome holidays in Eastern Canada
It always itched to go to Canada but the deciding factor was that we got the idea to rent a motorhome. We thought to ourselves, this is it! This way we will tour Canada. So much freedom and no packing and moving between accommodations, you literally drive with your entire belongings to the next destination. Whether this is a luxury campground or a National Park with a little less amenities or none, you can even grab a few nice hotels in between if you like this.
We started the trip in Toronto and first stayed in a hotel there for two days and one night. For people from Europe, almost all rental companies also require that there be a night between picking up the motorhome and arrival. Even if it wasn't I would have chosen this, just recovering from the flight and enough time to see Toronto city. We went to the Niagara Falls which is easy to do from Toronto.
Tip from Thomas: If you are in Toronto during the Ice Hockey season you can go to a Maple Leafs game one night, really great!
The second day we were able to pick up the camper early because of the early bird we had booked with it. First on the list of places we wanted to see was Bruce Peninsula National Park, this is a beautiful nature reserve with many rocky beaches and very clear water. In summer this is really a must-see, especially for the adrenaline seekers among us, who love climbing and jumping off the beautiful cliffs and rocks.
Then we drove further up through the natural areas around Huntsville, Northbay and Val d'Or - all the way to Ottawa. Starting with the Algonquin Provincial Park where you are actually already surrounded by the beautiful forests and lakes recently that you are only a few hours from Toronto. By the way, this National Park is one of the best places to see moose.
This area stretches on and on and you go through hundreds of miles of beautiful diverse nature full of wild life. With the RV you can stay overnight almost anywhere and this brings a lot of freedom.
Ottawa is the capital of Canada and slowly but surely you feel more and more the French influences emerging. Montreal is the first French city on the route and what you may not know is that it is located on an island. The City has both a modern and an old city center and in terms of creative design it is a special city, for example, it has no skyscrapers and this was deliberately chosen. This provides a beautiful picture especially from the hill Mount Royal in the middle of the center.
Quietly we drove along the Saint Lawrence River and through Jacques Cartier National park to Saguanay. The Saguenay Fjord is surrounded by greenery and towering cliffs rising straight out of the water in some places. You can take beautiful hikes here and camp in peace.
Thomas: The best hike we had done was of course the Statue Trail, this is a walk of about seven kilometers along the beautiful viewpoints over the fjord.
On the way back we went along the Lawrence River again because it took us past the village of Tadoussac, which is one of the better places in Canada to do a whale watching tour. The season runs roughly from May to November but the best period is late June to early September. So should you pass through here during this period or other places where you can do a whale anyway is definitely recommended.
The next French city on the itinerary is the capital of the French province, Quebec. More than 95% of the inhabitants speak French and a quarter speak both English and French.
The city is located on the Saint Lawrence River and has a very nice old center; it felt like time had stood still for a while. The oldest part of Quebec was declared a world heritage site in 1985.
We had to return the camper in Montreal and drove back via the other side of the river. This is not more than a few hours' drive.
In Montreal we reminisced about this beautiful trip, unfortunately it was already over. It really was a huge experience and even though we saw so much beauty we still had this feeling that we could see even more because everywhere you go it is so beautiful.
And as a closing tip: Make choices and go to the places you must and want to see in any case but don't plan too much in your trip so you are not constantly on the go. I definitely have enough reasons to go back to this beautiful country someday.
