With these tips you will have a carefree motorhome trip through New Zealand
New Zealand is the perfect country to explore by motorhome! You have the freedom to travel at your own pace and you are not tied to a schedule; in other words: enjoy your vacation to the fullest. The travel preparation is of course important and of course we like to think along. Below are a few tips for traveling by motorhome. What should you think about when preparing? What do you take with you?
- For good tips on the road you can download the app 'camper mate', which can be used offline and contains all the campsites and information.
- If you travel in New Zealand with a self-contained campervan, you have your own shower and toilet facilities on board and are allowed to camp on all DOC campsites. If you travel with a compact camper without its own facilities, you are allowed to stay at some DOC campsites, which are similar to a Forestry Commission campsite and have minimal facilities so you are still in the middle of nature.
- For New Zealand, an international driver's license is required, which you can purchase from the ANWB with a passport photo and your own driver's license. The document is then immediately prepared. On the spot they may not always ask for the international driver's license, but if something happens and the police are involved, it is necessary.
- Because of the space in the motorhomes, we recommend that you do not bring a "hard case", but a cloth bag that you can easily store in the motorhome. Often you have space in the back of the camper under the benches/table.
- You can reserve a 'powered' or 'non-powered' spot at a campground. Of course, sometimes you need to charge the camper and then you choose one 'powered-site'. Handy to bring; world plug and a power strip to charge all equipment at once.
- In the camper you get the number of towels according to the number of people. It is therefore advisable to bring extra (quick-drying) towel(s) and an extra tea towel. You can also use large washers and dryers at a campground; these work with coins.
- A GPS is not standard in the campervan; at some rental agencies it can be added if required (payable locally) Tip: you can also download the app 'maps.me' and use it for free as navigation.
- If you are visiting both islands of New Zealand, we recommend booking the ferry in advance. We book it with the possibility to change to another date free of charge up to 48 hours before departure, subject to availability.
