Discover the interior - South Africa
Drakensberg Mountains
In the east of South Africa lie the Drakensberg Mountains, one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the country. This area lies on the border with Lesotho, the mini-state in South Africa. The mountain range is so beautiful that it is even on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Royal Natal National Park
This national park is among one of the most beautiful in South Africa, and for good reason. It is a well-known park because it is freely accessible when you are out and about by car. You can easily move around the park. The park is known for its rugged landscape with high peaks and deep valleys. Among the highlights are the Amphitheater and the Tugela Falls
Amphitheater and Tugela Falls
In the north of Drakensbergen is the amphitheater which is a naturally formed amphitheater. The amphitheater has a rock face about 1,200 meters high and 5 kilometers wide. If you want a nice view of the amphitheater, walk along the Tugela River into the valley.
In addition, visit Tugela Falls, the second highest waterfall in the world!
Golden Gate Highlands National Park
Named after the colors of the National Park, this park is home to zebras, wildebeest and jackals, among others. The area is also excellent for horseback riding. Just after sunrise and just before sunset, the park is at its most beautiful, when the rocks color along with the sun.
Sani Pass
This is the highest mountain pass in South Africa and it connects South Africa with Lesotho. This pass is the only way to drive to Lesotho from the east. On the way over this pass you cross a beautiful landscape, viewpoints and lots of curves. Also make sure to bring your passport. You will need this one to cross the border. Another important detail. This road is only passable with a 4x4.
Panoramic route
The starting point of this route is near the town of Graskop. From Graskop it is about an hour's drive to the Kruger Park, so this is a logical continuation after the Panorama route. This route is about 50 kilometers, so multiple nights is not necessarily necessary, but recommended if you want to visit this at a leisurely pace. The Panorama route, of course, gets its name from the amazing views you will encounter along the way.
The first stunning viewpoint of the route is God's Window. An endless view and on clear days you can see the Kruger Park and even Mozambique.
Next you will come to the Pinnacle Rock. A rock formation about 30 meters high, well worth a short stop.
Continue on the road and you will come to Blyde River Canyon. A gorge about 26 km long and 800 meters deep. There are several hiking trails in this natural area. So if you have longer time it is definitely worth to stay a little longer in this area.
In the Blyde Canyon you will find Bourke's Potholes. An extraordinary natural phenomenon. The water has eroded the rocks in such a way that deep holes have been created.
Another special rock formation are the Three Rondavels. These were formed by a natural process of erosion. From the lookout point you can see the Blyde River Canyon below you.
Kruger Park
The African Safari dream! An absolute Must during a trip to South Africa. Sleep under the stars or in a luxury safari tent, discover adventure among the wild animals.
It is possible to go into the park with a ranger. He often knows better where the wild animals are and how to approach them. In the camp where you spend the night, they do know where the animals were last spotted, so you can also drive through the park yourself with a rental car. Although this of course gives no guarantee that they are still there. If you drive through the park yourself, you have to follow some rules. Always keep enough distance with the animals, also you may not drive faster than 50 km per hour and getting out of the car is strictly prohibited!
Of course you will find the big five in the park, but in addition there are many more animal species in the park and that is exactly what makes it so special. Giraffes, cheetahs, zebras, warthogs and hyenas chances are you will encounter them too!
For a unique experience you can also book a night safari, this is always accompanied by a ranger.
