Auckland - Bay of Islands tour
Day 1: Auckland - Whangerei
From Auckland, you drive to the Whangarei area, where you can enjoy the coast of Tutukaka. Also, visit Whangarei Falls, where you can take a refreshing dip in the pool. For a beautiful view, you can go to Whangarei Heads. You can spend the night at one of the camping spots here.
Day 2: Whangerei - Bay of Islands
Today, you will continue to the Bay of Islands via the Old Russell Coastal Road (through the towns of Helena Bay and Oakura). We recommend stopping in Helena Bay to visit the Helena Bay Café or the gallery for a nice lunch and coffee. You can stay overnight in Russell or Paihia (you can visit these islands by ferry, which also carries campers and operates several times a day).
Day 3: Bay of Islands - Doubtless Bay
You can spend the morning on the sacred grounds of Waitangi, a beautiful home of the Māori, which you can visit. You can take a tour guided by a real Māori chief, and special dances will most likely be performed for you.
Afterwards, you can drive on to Doubtless Bay. Stroll along the beautiful bay, and if you're driving in the summer, feel free to take a refreshing swim. Spend two nights in Mangonui, a charming town south of Doubtless Bay. Be sure to try one of the local seafood dishes at a nearby restaurant!
Day 4: Doubtless Bay
Today, you can take a bus tour from Doubtless Bay to Cape Reinga, via the famous 90 Mile Beach. This will bring you to the northernmost point of the North Island. The viewpoint at the lighthouse is breathtaking, and on a clear day, you can see the Three Kings Islands and Cape Maria.
Day 5: Doubtless Bay - Dargaville
Today, you’ll drive south from Mangonui to Dargaville, a charming town nestled in the heart of Northland. Along the way, you’ll pass through scenic countryside and coastal landscapes. Once in Dargaville, be sure to explore the nearby Waipoua Forest, home to the majestic Tāne Mahuta, the world’s largest kauri tree.
Day 6: Dargaville - Auckland
On the last day, you will drive back to Auckland. Enjoy the beautiful places along the way to make a stop before returning the motorhome.
