Carefree self-contained motorhome rental in New Zealand
The islands of New Zealand have a multifaceted landscape and after every turn you see another beautiful panorama in front of you! The beautiful mountains and lakes, meadows full of sheep, the unspoiled planes, the country is in my opinion one big National Park. Beautiful hiking trails are marked everywhere and you never cease to be amazed by the beautiful nature.
Marloes: "New Zealand is really a camper country. I therefore prefer this way of traveling."
Traveling by campervan gives enormous freedom because you can go wherever you want! If you travel in a 'self-contained-camper', you will have your own shower and toilet on board and it is allowed to wild camp in New Zealand. Always make sure it's safe, though. You can also find DOC campsites throughout the country; simple campsites comparable to state forestry campsites. Here you have to put money in an envelope upon arrival. In terms of facilities, there is often only a picnic table. Very close to wild camping and then also allowed for campers, in some places only for campers with shower and toilet.
The distances are easy to drive. All routes are an immediate excursion with the varied views on the route. So keep in mind 60km per hour for your planning as you make stops everywhere!
Every day is different and you can experience four seasons in one day. Plan your route a bit in advance, otherwise you will run out of time! In my opinion, spring is the best travel time, in October and November the country starts blooming! In high season, the country is a lot busier and also more expensive. Think about airfare and RV rentals here.
Often you travel from the North Island to the South Island; you then start in Auckland and travel to Christchurch. This way you travel with the weather in the spring. It is also spectacular - as you head toward the rugged mountain scenery of the South Island. In the fall, you are more likely to travel from the south to the subtropical north, that is, from Christchurch to Auckland.
The motorhome always goes on the ferry and for this you book a day and time slot. It is always advisable to sail in the morning as the weather can get stormier as the wind picks up around noon. The ferry crossing takes over 3 hours and then you will be across around lunchtime and have enough time to drive to the next campsite.
Tip from Marloes:
Think about which excursions you would like to do in advance, sometimes it is wise to book them in advance!
