Germany is not only a great destination for an active vacation in spectacular nature, but visiting a special city here and there is also worthwhile. For example, Berlin is perhaps the cultural capital of Europe and offers many impressive sights. The (former) Berlin Wall, the Brandenburg Gate and the Holocaust Monument are a few examples. Of course, Berlin has a motorhome rental depot, where you can pick up a rental motorhome to explore the country. But also in other major cities such as; Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hannover, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Nuremberg and Munich, for example, you can rent a motorhome to explore the beautiful surrounding regions.
If you thought the Dutch are crazy about camping, check out our eastern neighbors as well. With as many as 3,000 well-kept campsites, you can always find one near the various nature reserves. Campers are the big favorite with the Germans, which is why there are more and more camper sites in towns and villages these days. Here you can park your camper for free or for a small fee for several days in the city center. A power connection and facilities to empty the chemical toilet are available for a fee. Germany has by far the most depots in Europe where you can pick up a rental motorhome for your adventurous tour of Germany.
Northern Germany
The atmospheric seaside resorts, long sandy beaches and extensive dunes of the North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts in northern Germany have great appeal for lovers of beach vacations, water sports and nature. The mostly flat hinterland has beautiful cycling routes, and the lake district of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is great for those seeking peace and quiet. This not yet much visited region has beautiful lakes, wonderful forests and picturesque Hanseatic towns. The Harz is home to the only low mountain range in northern Germany. Explore the beautiful piers stretching into the Baltic Sea, experience the cozy seaside town of St. Peter-Ording or wander through the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park during your RV trip through Germany.
Northern Germany is divided into the states; Lower Saxony, Bremen, Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Due to its high waves, the German North Sea coast is very popular with surfers and sailors and is located in Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein. The German Baltic Sea coast in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Schleswig-Holstein is very popular with families and water sports enthusiasts. Along the long coastline of the Baltic Sea coast there are long stretches of white sandy beaches and cozy seaside resorts, such as the popular Heiligendamm. The beach at Gelting is highly recommended, but the islands of Rügen and Fehmarn are also worth a visit. Both islands can be reached from the mainland via a long bridge. The weather on the Baltic coast is less turbulent and therefore very suitable for children. Of course, a trip to the bustling cities of Bremen and Hamburg is certainly not to be missed.
East Germany
Perhaps not everyone immediately thinks of East Germany as a vacation destination, but that is unjustified. The former GDR has blossomed tremendously in recent years, with Berlin becoming a bustling metropolis. There is plenty of impressive history to be found in this part of Germany, but in addition it has spectacular nature in abundance. The primeval forests of the Thuringian Forest, the mountains of the Ore Mountains and the wetlands surrounding Berlin.
The various federal states of East Germany each have their own peculiarities. Just across the former border between West and East Germany are the true primeval forests in the hills of Thuringia. The Thuringian Forest is also known as the green heart of Germany. These are actually two mountain ranges that gradually merge; the Thuringian Forest and the Thuringian Schiefergebirge. In this beautiful region, you can still find medieval half-timbered towns, such as Quedlinburg and Wenigerode amid untouched nature. To the north of Thuringia is the state of Saxony-Anhalt, where history has left much beauty behind. Toward the border with the Czech Republic, Saxony has much to offer in the Ore Mountains and Saxon Switzerland. The special thing about the state of Brandenburg is that it completely surrounds the capital city of Berlin. Exchange the hustle and bustle of the city for the pleasant countryside interspersed with sparkling lakes and babbling rivers. Some highlights of this region include lively Potsdam with its magnificent palaces and the Spreewald Forest.
