Alice Springs Round trip
Day 1: Alice Springs - Glen Helen
You will pick up your 4WD motorhome in Alice Springs. At the local Tourist Office or online, you can obtain a permit for the road through Aboriginal land, such as the Mereenie Loop Road. It's a beautiful drive along the Western MacDonnell Ranges to Glen Helen, where you'll stay for two nights. Along the way, you can visit Palm Valley, Standley Chasm, and Ormiston Gorge. In Glen Helen, you can stay at the historic Glen Helen Resort.
Day 2: Glen Helen
You have a full day to explore the Glen Helen area. For example, you can visit the beautiful Palm Valley or explore the ruins at Hermannsburg and Finke Gorge.
Day 3: Glen Helen - Kings Canyon
On the unpaved Mereenie Loop Road, you'll drive through the 'real' outback, with fascinating views from the lookouts over the desert. It's best not to leave too late for Kings Canyon if you want to do the beautiful 'Canyon Walk' (approx. 3-4 hours). You can also opt for the shorter 'Creek Walk' (approx. 1 hour).
Day 4: Kings Canyon - Ayers Rock
You will drive on to Ayers Rock, where you'll stay for two nights. Due to the color changes, the monolith of Ayers Rock is most beautiful at sunset. Because of the many Aboriginal rock art, it's worth walking around it. We also recommend visiting the Olgas, a little further away, and taking a walk through the 'Valley of the Winds.
5th day: Ayers Rock and Olgas
You have another day to explore the area around Ayers Rock or relax in the heart of the great Australian desert. There are also numerous excursions available to Aboriginal communities in the area.
Day 6: Ayers Rock - Alice Springs
This is the last day of the self-drive. You will drive back to Alice Springs to return your 4WD motorhome. On the way, you'll pass Erldunda, where you can visit the 'camel farm’.
