Besides the fact that it is ideal to always have your 'home' with you, it also brings you to undiscovered places and makes it easier to meet the locals. And locals you want to meet, because they are super friendly and love to tell you about all the wonderful places the country has to offer.
Fun fact, the roads in Portugal are also great quality, the campsites very cheap and sometimes even free!
Saudade is one of the most beautiful Portuguese words, full of emotion and almost impossible to translate. The Portuguese use it to express their feelings. This can be a feeling of lack, love or distance. We would describe it as homesickness or longing. If you listen to a Fado in Lisbon or Porto, you will hear the word often.
Costa de Lisboa
The Costa de Lisboa is an incredibly varied area, visit the beaches of Cascais, soak up culture in Lisbon and visit the castles of Sintra. In short, there is something for everyone!
Lisbon is Portugal's largest city and thus its capital. Make this city as your starting or ending point, Lisbon is a Must See during a trip through Portugal. To get a good impression of the city, join a free guided walking tour of the city. The locals are so proud of their city that they are only too happy to give tourists a tour. And what could be better than exploring a new city with a local. Wander the small streets of the Alfama neighborhood and end the day with a drink in the Barrio Alta. Also be sure to visit a Fado restaurant, for example Tasco do Chico. This is a small family restaurant known for its Fado performances. Another must is a ride on Tram 26.
Also be sure to visit the Belém district. The Pastel de Nata capital of Portugal. This is where the delicious pastry comes from, which is why it is also called Pastel de Belém.
Cascais and Estoril
Cascais and Estoril originated as two separate cities, but over time they have grown together. Yet they are very different from each other. Cascais is the cozy and picturesque part of the two. Fishing boats on the beach, small restaurants and historic buildings. Estoril is more the fashionable part of the two, adorned by a casino and expensive hotels.
Sintra
About half an hour's drive from Lisbon brings you to the mountain village of Sintra. On sunny days you will see the beautiful and bright colors of the castles, but on foggy days you will experience the mystique of the village. It is easiest to move through the village by city bus. The roads are fairly narrow and with the bus you get off in front of the door. A ticket costs about €5 per person, but can be very crowded in the summer months. Tickets for the palaces can be bought separately at each palace. Some pay a one-day visit to Sintra, but you can easily spend several days here. Surely the most famous castle is Palácia da Pena and should definitely not be missed on a visit. Besides this castle, there are numerous other castles such as Quinta da Regaleira, Palacio de Monserrate and the Palace of Sinta.
